What to expect

Historic ruins, beaches and swimming in underground caves make this an action-packed morning of discovery. A guided tour of Tulum is followed by a visit to a traditional Maya community. What's more, you'll get to take a dip in a cenote, too. Benito, one of our local guides, says, ‘Most of Tulum dates from the two centuries before Spanish colonisation, so it's a final snapshot of a doomed civilisation. Among the many things you'll learn is the symbolism behind the deities carved into the temples.'

First up, explore the remains of the Maya city of Tulum. Your expert guide will show you temples of the Frescoes, the Descending God, the Winds and more. And then there's El Castillo pyramid, whose clifftop location overlooking the Caribbean saw it double as a lighthouse. Nowadays, it's made for Instagram – it's the most photographed location in the Riviera Maya. Gustavo, another of our local guides, says, ‘Tulum is that perfect balance between culture and nature – just look at all the iguanas you'll see lazing around. The ancient Maya appreciated this, and each area represented one of the elements – earth, water, wind and fire.'

Then we'll take some time to look around a Maya village and meet some members of the community. We'll find out about the traditions and customs of the village, before finishing up with a swim in a cenote. These freshwater sinkholes were sacred to the ancient Maya. A bit of snorkelling in this hallowed cavern is the ideal way to round off your experience.

This was approximating on false advertising as one could not help feeling that this was one long contrived hustle. £245 for 3 persons. However, nowhere is there mention of £40 per person 'local tax' which our tour guide sheepishly sprung on us at arrival to the destination. Secondly, there is NO lunch provided. At every point of this trip you are being prompted to tip someone including the tour guide. This was a con.

The morning was very enjoyable. Karina was extremely knowledgeable and made sure we were looked after. Tulum was stunning and the early start was perfect as we missed the heat of the day and it was much quieter. The choice to go around with her or off on our own was great, although we did follow her.The Mayan village/ people were lovely and making tortillas was fun. The cenote swim ended the morning nicely. It would have been nice to be informed on Tui app to take flip flops for the cenote.

Our guide Alan (for short) was amazing from pick up to drop off. He was so informative, enthusiastic and welcoming taking extra time to answer questions from our son. We enjoyed every aspect of the tour in particular the trip to the mayan village and swim in the cenote which is such a beautiful setting and a memory that will never be forgotten. The driver kept us cool and after the trip to the Tulum had snacks and cold water waiting as we set off to the village. Thank you Alan & Co

We loved having Mary and Ricky as tour guide and driver. Mary was so clear and knowledgeable about Mayan culture and managed expectations really deftly throughout the day. It was perfect timing going for the morning tour to be back in the hotel in the afternoon and the activities moved at a suitable pace. We loved the opportunity to get to make a homemade tortilla and the cenote swim was breathtaking. Would thoroughly recommend and felt the amount that we did represented great value for money.
